Item #LAU2
Rare Large Antique Mettlach punch Bowl with Underplate
This is a Mettlach Punch Bowl #3037/1315. The underplate measures 16 3/4" in
diameter. The punch bowl is 9 1/2" high 10 1/2" in diameter and measures 14 1/2"
from handle to handle. The Lid adds another 4" to the height. The background
color is cream with green being the predominant color. Grapes and leaves adorn
the plate bowl and lid. The bowl has scenes of Burg Landshut and Ruine
Graffinburg. The translated inscription reads "On the banks of the river O Holy
Island & to Green Mountains & Valley I greet you from my heart 1000 times."
Mettlach made a small number of what is called bowle. These are punch bowls and
were decorated extensively and almost always had lids and occasionally included
a plate but rarely came with a ladle. This one has a plate but no ladle. I
estimate the age of this piece to be over a 100 years. The condition is good
with no chips or cracks. There is a scratch on the lid (see photo) and small
scratches on the under plate. The inside of the punch bowl is discolored but I
am told these punch bowls held a layer of fruit, layer of sugar and covered with
a 180 proof liquor such as rum. This was repeated until the bowl was filled and
then it was allowed to ferment. I can only guess what kind of punch that would
make! This is a rare piece. To properly prepare this set for shipment the
handling costs will be $15.00 in addition to the shipping and insurance. |
